Step 5: After the interview

Step 5 of 5

The interview is done. But there are still steps to take afterwards.

What to do next, if you didn’t get the job

Dealing with bad news

Remember it’s rare that people are successful straight away, especially when moving into a new career. But if you don’t get the job, don’t give up.

Keep going, and if you need more support, you can always talk to one of our friendly advisers

Every interview is a chance to practice

See these interviews as an opportunity to learn and improve your interview skills. The more exposure to interviews you have, the more confidence you’ll gain.

It's also giving you the chance to ask questions to the interview panel and find out areas you can improve.

Getting more experience if needed

You might get feedback that you lack experience in a certain area.

This will give you new insights to think about and new areas to potentially develop, but getting this feedback doesn’t mean you have to stop applying for other jobs.

Learning more about transferable skills

Every job will teach you key skills. Even if you’re not immediately aware these skills can translate directly to another sector, you will know more than you realise.

You can learn more about transferable skills on the National Career Service.
