Routes into FE teaching

Becoming a Further Education (FE) teacher is more accessible than you might think. Unlike school teaching, there isn't just one set route into the profession. You can train before you apply, or you can land a job first and train while you earn.

Whether you are an industry expert looking to switch careers or a graduate starting out, this step-by-step guide will help you navigate the recruitment process and find the right role for you.

Step 1: Think about what you want from a teaching role

Before you start applying, take a moment to reflect on what you want from a new career. Consider which subject you are best placed to teach based on your industry skills, what kind of students you want to work with (adults, apprentices, or 16-19 year olds), and practical factors like location and salary.

Step 2: Prepare your CV

Your CV needs to do more than list your work history; it needs to show how your experience translates into the classroom. Learn how to use the STAR method to highlight your transferable skills and write a personal statement that demonstrates your passion for teaching.
