If you already hold a degree and want to teach students aged 16 and over, the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Further Education is a popular route into the profession. A PGCE is a Level 7 academic qualification. It is designed specifically for those who want to teach in colleges, sixth forms, and adult education settings, rather than primary or secondary schools.

What is an FE PGCE?

Level 7 qualification

The FE PGCE is an academic qualification validated by a university. Because it is at Level 7 (Master's level), it demonstrates a high level of critical engagement with educational theory.

Unlike a schools-based PGCE which focuses on the National Curriculum for children, an FE PGCE focuses on the methods and practice of teaching adults and young people. You will learn curriculum design, behaviour management for adults, and inclusive teaching practices.

Course structure and placements

You can typically choose between two modes of study:

  • Full-time (Pre-service): Usually takes one year. You attend university for lectures but spend a significant portion of your time on placement in a real college, observing and teaching classes with the support of a mentor.
  • Part-time (In-service): Usually takes two years. This is for those already working in the sector who want to gain the qualification alongside their job, attending university one day a week.

Fees and funding

As a university-led course, the FE PGCE is eligible for Student Finance. This means you can apply for tuition fee loans and maintenance loans to support your living costs while you train.

Furthermore, if you are training to teach a high-demand subject such as maths, science, engineering, or computing, you may be eligible for a tax-free government bursary worth up to £30,000. You do not have to pay this bursary back.

Professional status (QTLS)

Gaining your PGCE is the first step to full professional recognition. Once you have successfully completed the course, you can register for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

QTLS is recognised in law as equivalent to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in schools, giving you the flexibility to teach across the education sector and progress into leadership roles.
