Power the future by teaching Digital, IT and Computing in FE

The digital landscape changes fast, with new technologies and techniques emerging all the time. Further Education (FE) needs agile, tech-savvy professionals to keep the curriculum current and the teaching rooted in real-world knowledge.

By teaching IT and computing in FE, you can use your experience and knowledge to shape the next generation of developers, data scientists, and digital creatives. Whether you’re a software engineer, a network admin, or a digital marketer, your industry expertise is vital.

Moving into teaching in FE offers you the chance to change your career path and move away from the corporate grind. You could gain a better work-life balance while still staying connected to the latest tech trends. And most importantly, you can inspire others to succeed in the industry.

Which digital and tech subjects can you teach?

Computing, networking and cyber security

There is a critical shortage of experts capable of teaching these core skills that underpin the digital economy. If you have a background in infrastructure or development, you’re in high demand for FE teaching.

Colleges need specialists to teach:

  • Software development and coding (Python, C#, Java)
  • Cyber security and ethical hacking
  • Network infrastructure and cloud computing
  • Data analysis and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • T Levels in Digital Support Services

You’ll be preparing students for immediate employment in a sector that’s crying out for skilled talent. It’s an incredible way to help shape the digital industry of tomorrow.

Creative digital, gaming and Esports

The UK creative industries are booming. FE colleges are investing heavily in high-tech studios to help equip their students with the skills to succeed. Teaching in FE is your chance to turn your passion for creative tech into a new career.

Your skills are needed for:

  • Game design and development: From Unreal Engine to narrative design
  • Esports: One of the fastest-growing courses in the UK
  • Digital graphics and animation: 3D modelling and VFX
  • Web design and UI/UX

If you love the latest gadgets and tech and have real-world experience to share, the FE classroom is an exciting place to be.

Digital skills for life and work

Not every student wants to be a coder or a digital creative, but they all need the digital skills to succeed in today’s workplaces. FE colleges need patient and knowledgeable teachers to deliver essential digital skills to all students.

Roles include:

  • Teaching digital skills in FE: Helping adults upskill for the modern workplace
  • Social media and digital marketing: Teaching business students how to leverage digital platforms
  • IT user skills: Microsoft Office, collaborative tools, and basic troubleshooting

"The great advantage of teaching in Further Education is that it provides me with an opportunity to learn new skills whilst offering a fresh way to use my experience acquired in industry. It is a win – win situation."

The qualifications you need to teach digital in FE: Degree or industry experience

Many people working in the digital sector have university degrees. And if you do, you can apply for a PGCE or bursary-funded training to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

A degree isn’t always mandatory, and you can still teach in Further Education without one. If you have significant professional experience – as a self-taught developer or network engineer, for example – you can still teach.

Further Education colleges are interested in industry professionals with real-world experience. The digital industry moves so quickly, and self-taught individuals often continue to keep up with the latest trends and developments. This mindset and approach to learning can be invaluable to inspire the next generation. Plus, your up-to-date industry certifications (like Cisco, Microsoft, and Adobe) are highly valued assets in the classroom.
